Inspiring Journeys: Reflecting on the MASTS SUPER REP Award Studentship

πŸ”„ Reporting Period = Reflection Time! πŸ”„

A couple of months ago, I was awarded funding - MASTS SUPER REP - for an undergraduate student placement, which enabled me to take on Freya Johnson, a highly motivated student, for a field trip to Thailand. This opportunity was made possible by the generous support of MASTS Scotland - Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland. πŸŽ“πŸŒ

Freya’s placement was split between Thailand and Scotland, where she immersed herself in vital research on plastic pollution in Southeast Asia. πŸŒŠπŸ”¬

This unique experience significantly enhanced her skills in fieldwork, lab work, communication, and public outreach, providing her with a real research environment that is essential for a career in environmental microbiology. Her contributions also advanced our group's broader project objectives, particularly in data collection and public engagement. πŸ“ŠπŸ’¬

As both a teacher and researcher, I find the synergy between student growth and project goals invaluable. Such placements foster both individual and collective progress. A heartfelt thank you to MASTS Scotland for making this opportunity possible! πŸ™

I’m thrilled to share that Freya graduated in June from the University of Stirling and is continuing her important work with us at the University of Stirling, further contributing to our research on plastic pollution. πŸŽ“πŸš€
